Residents deserve a straight answer to a simple question: Why? Why this decision? Why this expenditure? Why now? A mayor who cannot answer ‘why’ has no business making decisions on your behalf.
Reno must bring forward realistic goals to control government waste while stopping the abuse of the General Fund. Fees received from utilities (power, sewer, water and garbage etc.) should remain in restricted accounts in lieu of the General Fund that is consistently abused.
During the pandemic, Reno received emergency federal funds meant for public health, essential workers, and infrastructure. Instead, city leaders used that money to hire new employees and give salary increases that taxpayers will be funding for decades. The emergency is over. The costs continue.
Here’s a fact every Reno taxpayer should know: The ReTRAC project was completed in the early 2000s. After adding federal funds and Union Pacific contributions, the city owed $165 million. Twenty-three years and millions in payments later, Reno now owes approximately $212 million. We’ve been paying for a generation and owe $50 million more than when we started. That’s not fiscal management. That’s a failure of leadership.
